Assignment: Triangles Investigation

Jeremy and Arnold were talking about the lesson that they had covered recently in math class.

Mrs. Hudson, their math teacher, always encouraged the boys to ?see the math for themselves,?

meaning she wanted the boys simply not to accept what they've been taught, but to really prove

the ideas to themselves. They covered several topics recently that they were struggling with how

to prove the concepts were true. Cut apart and use the diagrams of the three triangles attached to

the last page to establish relationships and help the boys better understand the concepts.

Part I: Angle Sum Relationships

Arrange the three congruent triangles so that angles 1 and 3 are adjacent to one another, and

angle 2 is adjacent to angles 1 and 3. What do you notice about the three angles?

Use the diagrams of the three triangles that you have cut from the back page to explore each of

the measurements of the exterior angles of a triangle. Arrange the triangles so that the three angles form a straight line as shown. What do you notice about each exterior angle measurement when you arrange the triangles so

that the three angles form a straight line?

If angle 1 = 60o and angle 2 = 90o, what is the measurement of angle 3?

If angle 1 = 60o and angle 2 = 90o, what is the sum of angles 1 and 2?

What do you notice about the sum of the angles inside the triangle and the exterior angle

measurement?

AV011413 Part III: Exterior Angles of Triangle

Arrange the triangles so that their edges form two parallel lines cut by transversals as shown in

the diagram below. What do you notice about the angles formed when two parallel lines are cut by a transversal?

Use specific evidence from the diagram to support your observation.

Two transversals are shown on the diagram. Look at the other angles. Does your observation

hold true? Use specific evidence from the diagram to support your observation.
