LITR320 - World Literature Deadline:
Due by the end of Week 5 at 11:59 pm, ET.
Directions:
Read the stories, ?Stale Mates? by Zhang Ailing on pages 693-698, ?Breast-Giver,? by Mahasweta Devi
on pages 698-716, and ?TV People,? by Murakami Haruki on pages 1008-1021. After you have read the
stories, answer the Critical Thinking Questions below.
Literary Term for Study: Conflict
Conflict is the term used to describe the struggle taking place in the story. Every story needs a conflict
because that is what drives the action of the story forward. There are different types of conflict.
? ? Internal Conflicts are ones taking place within the mind of the character. Internal conflicts typically
appear when a character is faced with a difficult decision or choice and he or she needs to think it
through. In the ?old days? the internal conflict was presented as the Devil and Angel sitting on the
shoulder of the character.
External Conflicts are ones in which something is taking place outside the character and involving
another force. External conflicts can be things like Man vs. Nature, Man vs. Machine, Man vs.
Supernatural, or Man vs. Man. External conflicts are the ones we typically see in action movies or
romance. Some force outside the hero or heroine makes it extremely difficult for the hero/heroine to
achieve the desired goal. Critical Thinking Questions:
Answer the three questions below in a new Microsoft Word document. Be certain to include your name,
course number, and section number, along with the week of the course, at the top of your document.
Your answers should be insightful, detailed, and include specific references to the texts as a means of
supporting your ideas. Answers are to be written in grammatically correct sentences and proper
paragraph formats. Do not copy and paste your responses from any outside sources; your replies
should be original writing that shows me what YOU think. Upload and submit your Word document.
1. In ?Stale Mates,? the story intertwines old and new, Western and Chinese elements that have
lifealtering effects on the characters? lives. What statement is the author making about these themes
by writing the story in English instead of Chinese?
2. In ?Breast-Giver,? Jashoda?s milk-bearing benefits men because their wives a) get to keep their
figures; and b) no longer have an excuse to say ?no? to sex. What does it say about the value of
women?s bodies not only in Asian society, but in society in general? How did these values come into
being?
3. In his fiction, Haruki captures elements of late 20 th Century culture, including language, themes,
technology references, Western pop music, and brand name consumer products, not to mention
sexual relations, divorce, and alienation. How does the inclusion of these elements in ?TV People? further the idea that human lives and relationships are significantly affected by technological
advances?
4. Select two of the stories you read this week. For each story identify the following: The primary
conflict. Is the conflict internal or external? The way in which the conflict is resolved.
