A.) The original KIPP schools in Houston and New York were very successful. From 1995 to

 

1999, 90-100% of students in both schools had passed the state exams. Attendance was around

 

100% for each school and some students tested grade levels were above recent high school

 

graduates. The fact that there were hundreds of students on wait lists to try and enter each

 

school is a good indicator that people were aware of the academic success students were

 

achieving. In 1999 the graduating class in Houston alone had earned more than 1million in

 

academic scholarships to private, parochial, and boarding schools. The operational model that

 

set them apart from other standard schools was the turning over of complete authority to Mike

 

and David or the school to discipline the children with long hours of hard work and punishment

 

if necessary. Getting the children and parents on board by signing a commitment form that gave

 

almost complete authority to the school to do ?whatever was needed?. As well the seclusion and

 

one on one work with each student promoted focused study by eliminating distractions.

 

B.)

 

I think the KIPP schools could be replicated to some degree. As long as the culture of

 

hard work and dedication is present then the schools could succeed. I think a huge determinant

 

would be the need for the schools to have the power to discipline the kids and keep them for

 

long hours at a time in order to allow the students to develop the idealistic work ethic. As KIPP

 

expands Mike and David will become stretched and may not be able to attend to each school

 

and every student. This could be devastating to the operational model since the culture of hard

 

work ethic stems from the vision of Mike and David alone. If they are able to share their vision

 

with others who have tremendous work ethics as well then the model could be expanded to

 

other regions of poor minority school districts.

 

C.)

 

My advice to Mike and David as far as management would be to be sure and choose

 

their future teachers well because they will have to share the vision and work ethic in order to

 

make KIPP a success. I also think it may be important for Mike and David to trust the teachers

 

they hire and treat each teacher as a unique individual. You can?t micromanage certain people

 

because it may blow up in your face. Other people however may require constant contact and

 

assistance in order to be successful, just like the students in the demographic areas that KIPP

 

National serves.
