Reading Assignment

Chapter 14:

Basic Data Analysis

Chapter 15:

Testing for Differences between Groups and for Predictive Relationships

Unit Lesson

Data analysis in the most basic sense consists of the process of inspecting, cleaning and transforming data

into information that can be used by the stakeholders within an organization. Once the data has been

gathered, the first step in the process consists of coding, which is the process of assigning numerical values

to the data. This provides the researcher with the ability to measure the qualitative or quantitative data.

Data analysis involves a process of moving from raw numbers to a level of statistical inference. The idea is to

effectively use accumulated data toward making assumptions, inferences, and conclusions, which will

theoretically solve problems within an organization.

As the researcher moves into the statistical analysis, he or she usually begins by putting together a frequency

table, which basically identifies how many times respondents answered each of the response choices. This

sometimes leads to the compilation of a contingency table, which compiles combinations of responses to

multiple variables. Overall, this might be considered an organizational tool that displays given data. Typically,

three columns are used and labeled as follows: intervals, results, and total frequency. Once the frequency

table is put together, researchers may also utilize other visual tools such as histograms or graphs.

Another step in the process is that of transforming the data or changing it into a mathematical format to more

easily analyze the data. This is done through a series of coding steps where numerical values are assigned

for each response. This is a critical step in the process as the researcher needs to identify which responses to

categorize into one unit or possibly which responses not to categorize at all, thereby treating each response

separately.

Hypothesis testing is used frequently by researchers. One could look at the hypotheses as statements the

researcher believes to be true (hypothetical guesses). Characteristics of the hypothesis should be specific

and consistent, stated in simple terms, relatable to a variable, and must be able to be tested within a certain

amount of time. Basically, when a researcher is putting together hypotheses, he or she is assembling

statements that he or she believes to be true. They are labeled H1, H2, H3, etc. An x STUDYof how

UNIT example GUIDE

hypothesis testing would be used is described in the situation below.

Title

You are conducting research to determine whether the prescribed target market has been effectively reached

by a series of advertisements. Additionally, you would like to know whether it has influenced them into

actually buying the product. You are also wondering about the effect of the advertising campaign on the

overall brand. You might put together the following hypothesis:

H1: The advertisement has created awareness within the target market.

H2: The advertisement has influenced the target market into buying the said product.

H3: The advertising campaign has created positive feelings about the brand.

H4: The advertising campaign has enhanced the overall company image.

Once the hypotheses have been put together, the researcher sets out to either prove or disprove each. This is

done by conducting a series of statistical analyses, as described earlier. Sometimes, when putting together

the hypothesis, researchers use a null hypothesis which is a hypothesis that has not yet been proven. This

might be used when a researcher is comparing two items, both of which are equal. The alternative hypothesis

is one that includes specific details of what the study is looking to prove. This might be used when the

researcher believes that one item is better or worse than the other. In other words, the researcher might

compile a hypothesis that states that product A is of less quality than product B. The idea is then to prove or

disprove each of the hypotheses using statistical analysis. This can be done using one variable (univariate),

two variables (bivariate), or three or more variables (multivariate). Babin and Zikmund (2016) suggest a three

step approach to hypothesis testing as identified below:

1. Identify and clearly state the hypotheses with an eye on the overall objective(s) of the study.

2. Establish the sample and measure the relevant variables.

3. Analyze whether the measured value proves the hypothesis to be true. If it is supported, the

hypothesis is said to be ?supported,? and if not, it is said to be ?not supported.?

From here, the researcher determines the significance level and considers the probability of type I and type II

errors and might perform one-tailed and two-tailed tests to test the validity of the assumption. The bivariate

regression analysis is a common quantitative statistical analysis completed by researchers. The basics of this

analysis is that the researcher is attempting to analyze how two variables are related to one another or how

they change together. Dr. Blake provides a good step-by-step guide on how to complete a bivariate

regression analysis using Excel (for additional information, please see the Suggested Reading).

Another measure is that of goodness of fit which looks at the discrepancy between the values that are

expected and the actual observed values. One popular test classified as a goodness of fit is that of Pearson?s

chi-squared test. This analysis takes the difference between the observed and expected outcome and divides

it by the expectation. As the researcher finds the need to determine whether two sets of data are significantly

different from each other, a t-Test might be used. Dr. Foltz provides a step-by-step guide to performing a ttest (for additional information, please see the Suggested Reading). Finally, the one-way analysis of variance

(ANOVA) is used by researchers to determine whether there are statistically significant differences in the

means of two or more groups. Again, Dr. Foltz provides a guide to completing this statistical analysis (for

additional information, please see the Suggested Reading). Another commonly used test is that of the F-test,

which reviews the level of variability of scores between one sample and another.

As researchers look to quantify and expedite their research studies, there have been a host of statistical

software packages produced. These packages will provide quick and accurate results, using all the analysis

techniques discussed in this unit. Popular software packages include SPSS, JMP, Microsoft Office Excel,

NVivo, and Google Analytics to name a few. The cost of these software packages is quickly returned with the

time-savings on the part of the research team.

Another developing concept is that of big data, which suggests that researchers are accumulating large

quantities of data. This may be attributable, at least in part, to advancements in technology that allow for this

accumulation of data. It is predicted that the analysis of these enormous amounts of data will increase

significantly in the next 10 years. It is all about speed and the amount of data that can be processed. The idea

of organizing, analyzing and interpreting these massive amounts of data seems almost surreal. Producing

actionable insight through the use of big data seems like the protocol for the day. From predicting buying

behaviors to finding new insights within an organization, big data is a reality in today?s world. The buying and

selling of data might become one of the most lucrative business models as companies look for ways to

UNIT x STUDY GUIDE

monetize their data. Conversely, other companies might only be interested in Title

purchasing from outside

sources in order to avoid getting into the complex business of data gathering. Another interesting aspect of

big data is the addition of jobs within this field. Senior big data administrator, big data developer, big data

technologist, software engineer, and big data architect are several of the jobs created through the advent of

big data within the framework of statistical analysis.

Carefully prepared statistical analysis will provide substantiation and significant support for decisions that are

critical to an organization?s continued profitability. The selection of the appropriate statistical analysis is based

upon the characteristics of the data and the overall objectives of the research. Determining the relationships

between variables and understanding the inferences within the statistics is key.
